December 9 Challenge. Something that really made you grow this year. That made you go to your edge and then some. What made it the best challenge of the year for you?
It’s been a challenging couple of years for me. I had my big gay divorce. I moved a couple of times. I moved to Colorado. I went from working in the office to working in the house. I went from knowing everyone in the state to not knowing anyone in my neighborhood.
All of these things have set me on a path that’s more amazing every day.
- I’m married to the woman of my dreams.
- I love living in Colorado.
- I love working from home.
- I even love George, even though he’s stinky.
So my Best of 2009 – Challenge, it’s not the biggest challenge I had this year, and it might not even be the best. But it’s the one that’s the longest and the one that’s making me stretch the most.
Making new friends
It’s complicated. Not only do I have to figure out how and where to make new friends, I have to figure out who. And why. And what kind. I spent over 30 years in the littlest state in the country. I know tons of people. I have many friends and many acquaintances. Moving to Colorado has made me think – now that I have to start over, just how do I want to do it?
What kind of people do I want in my life, and where do I find them, and then, how do I court them?
So far, so good. I’ve got some pretty fantastic people in my new life, and (IMO) I’ve done a good job of making connections with others.
Some people are just not replaceable – and frankly, I don’t need a new BFF.
I need people around me who challenge me, who make me think and laugh.
I need people who know a ton of shit that I don’t – and will let me ask them 10,000 questions.
I need people who want to try every small brewery in CO but understand that I am a 2 beer queer – and that’s with dinner.
So that’s my challenge for 2009. And 2010. And on and on…
P.S.
To Erika, who is one of my new people, who cracks me up, and knows way more than I do about a ton of things (and is seemingly willing to let me ask all manner of questions) – Happy (day before your) Birthday!

YOU crack me the hell up. Thanks for the early birthday wishes…and while you're traveling, nonetheless! Ask me anything. Lord knows, I'm an open book!
Thanks, pookie.
