A few weeks ago, I was all set and ready to head to the Mile High Social Media Club’s monthly gathering.
But the snow got the best of it, and I ended up home on the couch trolling my DVR.
I was nervous about the prospect of going… I didn’t know any of the people who would be there IRL (in real life,) and only a handful I’d met on Twitter.
I talked to my boss, who is the queen-apparent of networking, and she told me just one thing:
If someone makes eye contact, go up and say, Hi, I’m Elisa.
I was a bit hesitant about it… I know a ton of people back in RI, and meeting new people in a sea of friendly faces has always been easy for me. But a group of people, none of whom I had any degree of separation from? Scary.
So, in lieu of the MHSMC gathering, I’ve been sticking my neck out on Twitter, and it’s proved somewhat fruitful. I’m really looking forward to a new project with Erika Napoletano of RedheadWriting.com, Corey Snipes of Twomile.com, and Rick Ramos of Trypnotik.com… and I’ve made a commitment to stretch a little bit when it comes to getting my ass out of my comfort zone, and to be the first one to stick my hand out and say, Hi, I’m Elisa.
There’s still miles to go before I sleep…

I find that it's much easier to go up and say, “Hi, I'm Hope” with a champagne glass in my hand. :p
All the way to champagne, huh? Not a beer or glass of wine?

I hope to meet you IRL soon, Elisa!
Shhh… please don't tell any of my Twitter peers, but I'm inherently an introvert. Somehow I've managed to meet so many fabulous people in Denver at tweetups and other events, even though saying “Hi, I'm Cali” is out of my comfort zone. But doing so has made me more outgoing. And because of the acquaintances and friendships I've established, has been SO worth it. Hope to see you out 'n' about!
Hey Cali! Thanks for the comment, and your secret’s safe with me. Do come up and say hi if you see me out and about – I’m looking forward to meeting you IRL!
