A Question of Perspective

Moving to CO – 10 Months Later

It’s 10 months since Megan and I took the long drive (well, the second one) from Rhode Island to Colorado. It’s been a whirlwind of just under a year, with getting me out here, setting up my home office, getting settled as a remote worker and all of that work-related stuff. I got a promotion to Director of Project Management and Client Partnerships, which is awesome, and the remote worker thing is working out better than I’d ever thought possible.

I love working from home.

It’s fantastic in like 4,869 ways. Just a smattering of reasons working from home is wicked awesome:

  1. I don’t have to wear shoes. Ever.
  2. I actually get up and go outside and walk around during the day. Ok, sometimes I get up and go outside.
  3. I have a window, that opens and everything, right next to my desk. And it’s crazy sunny all the time. Not kidding. There’s a lot of sunshine in Colorado.
  4. I eat good food. With the refrigerator stocked with healthy stuff, I’ve been eating way better than I ever have before.
  5. I do laundry more often. (Somehow, even though I don’t have to leave the house to go to work, and Megan wears a uniform, we generate an insane amount of laundry. It’s not right.) Being close to the washer and dryer all day long somehow makes it less painful to throw in a load.
  6. I get a shitload of work done. Like 5x the amount I ever did in an office. It’s crazy how much more productive I am working from home. Boggles the mind, really.

kiss

Being married kicks ass.

On the personal front, we now have 2 months of marital bliss under our belts (and our honeymoon in just a few short days!) I’m still having a hard time with my new last name. That will come with (more) time, I assume.

(The photo on the right is my most favorite of all the photos taken on the big day, and was taken from the big man’s iPhone.  I don’t know why, it just captures the whole day for me… a little fuzzy, surrounded by our people, and lots of kissing Megan.)

bigmanBig Man = Big Catch

That’s the big man there, taller than both of us standing on chairs… he’s most certainly in the fantastic things about Colorado column, if you’re making a list, as I’m prone to do. He was Megan’s maid of honor (BFF dubbed herself best man during her toast, so Justin got maid of honor by default, since he gave the chick-in-the-dress’s toast), which he took in stride. One of many things about him that I dig. Listen up, girls: he’s single… seriously, this man is a catch.

P90X = Ouch

I’ve been doing P90X in an attempt to have some semblance of fitness, and it seems to be working, although not on the scale, most certainly in my mood, my posture and my general sense of well-being.

Meeting people = hard

It’s been a challenge to meet folks, mostly because the majority of my days are spent in my home office talking to clients and colleagues on the phone. And George.

George is stinky, but awesome. He keeps me company whilst I type, type, type away every day, and howls his little heart out when the UPS guy comes to the door.

Back to meeting people. It’s a pain in the ass. In Rhode Island, people used to tease me about knowing everyone everywhere I went. There were jibes about running for Mayor. (Put me in a suit, I could almost pass for Mayor of Providence…)

Without a baseline, it’s hard to meet new people. That’s my scientific finding. Back in RI, I knew tons of people, and then met tons more on a rolling basis. Here, I know a handful, and so the math is a little slower to multiply. I must say, though, on the upside of not knowing a million people, is that I can go places and not know anyone, which is strangely fabulous. Anonymity can be a good thing…

Overall, the move is a ringing success.

I dig pretty much everything about it here. I smile more. I actually enjoy having a dog. And Megan is without a doubt the best thing that ever happened to me.

Two thumbs up.

  • See, the kicker is Skype. I have to wear pants, because it's very embarrassing to have to get up and pee in the middle of a Skype meeting without them.
  • If I could work from home, I don't know if I would ever put pants on. Ever.
