I just had dinner with two of my friends from high school. Technically, one of them I’ve been friends with since we were 5.
Erin and Casey.
When I met Erin, she had pierced ears. At 5 years old. She was the coolest.
I think she might be the funniest person to breathe air. Several times throughout dinner, I had to stop myself from shooting my beverage through my nose.
We gossiped about other people we went to high school with. (Mostly because I was convinced that Sarah Hull was buying sushi at the counter while we ate. She wasn’t.)
We talked about people we didn’t have in common, friends we had made since high school. Notably this one girl that Erin had brought over to my house one night a few years ago.
She’s off the squad. I don’t hang out with her anymore.
Just like that.
I’ve had a lot of people on my squad. But who has that kind of time?
I’ve come to a conclusion. A small squad, minimal attrition, and a few old timers like Erin, who are just as cool as they were at 5… that’s it.
