Agotada por el viento by Luis_Jimenez
Of all of our honeymoon activities, Windsurfing was near the bottom of the list for me.
First off, it’s hard. Like really hard. And if you don’t have any sailing experience, it’s even harder, because you don’t understand basic wind maneuvering with a sail.
We booked 3 days – 2.5 hours each – of instruction, to the tune of over $600 for the two of us. We didn’t end up doing all 3 days – we canceled day 3 in favor of driving the road to Hana.
We went with Action Sports Maui, and booked online in advance. Our instructor was nice, but not very instructive. We showed up late to the first day because we went to the wrong location. When we got to the correct parking lot, he greeted us with a nod and a sort of grunt, and introduced himself as Brian. We trekked out to the beach with gear in tow. Him with the boards, and us with our sails.
Day one was interesting. Megan fared much better than I, with both the ability to go out and come back in. I could get up and sail out, but coming back in was a challenge that I never overcame. The wind picked up about an hour into the schooling, and Brian could be heard from the beach, shouting instruction.
Let it out!
What the fuck does that mean?
I think we’d both have preferred to have an instructor in the water with us on his own board, so that we could watch him and have a bit of learning by example.
Halfway through day 2, I’d had it. I was covered in bruises from falling over, hitting my legs and arms on the sail and the board, and my knees just didn’t want to be hopped up onto anymore. I couldn’t sail back to shore and had thrown what I decided was my last windsurfing-related, in-water hissy fit (I’m sure I was a sight to behold for those folks on shore
), and so for the last time, I swam my board to shore. Brain was nonplussed, but as I told him – it’s my honeymoon. I’m here to relax and have fun. So, I’m going to relax on the shore and have fun watching Megan windsurf.
He took the board and went out with her, and they putted around a bit.
Final answer
Was it fun? Not sure how to answer that. Sort of yes, sort of no. Hysterical, certainly.
Would I do it again? Maybe, if I still lived in RI or somewhere near the ocean and could take regular lessons with someone a bit more adept at teaching.
Was it worth the cost? Depends on your perspective, I suppose.
Overall: Not horrible but certainly not great. Megan’s wanted to take windsurfing lessons for years, so definitely good that she got to cross this one off of her list.
